Understanding data burden on ANMs in primary healthcare (Kurud, Nagri, Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh) to analyze health program reporting challenges

ReportsMay 06, 2024

This report aims to stress that the ANMs of primary healthcare facilities, especially Health and Wellness Centres(HWCs) have a large data recording and reporting workload. The data recording is done either in program-specific reporting formats or hard copy registers and reporting is done using a software application (online/offline) at different intervals of time using different platforms or through paper-based formats. And last but not least they also have to compile monthly reports for submitting details about their activities and various other reports desired for monitoring purposes.

The report is a deep dive into the ANM’s responsibilities to understand if the health data recording and reporting are resulting in the load faced by the ANMs and whether feasible options were available for optimizing their time and effort. A qualitative method approach was followed, which included in-depth interviews, and group discussions with all the concerned stakeholders of state, district, block, and lower levels.

The activities of the ANM were observed on a regular day like an OPD day, outreach field workday and special immunization session day / VHSND day. The report captures the concerns related to the health data recording and reporting load and the suggestions given by the HWC’s workforce for improvement. Key findings indicate that ANMs devote a significant portion of their time to data-related activities, leading to increased workload
