India's economic growth and demographic dividend notwithstanding, many lack access to healthcare, education, and social protection. Compared to its neighbors, India lags in maternal and child health. Medical expenses drive poverty, with nearly half of children malnourished. Urban areas provide better curative care but lack preventive services due to inadequate infrastructure. Nagpur, with 2.5 million people, has only 26 Urban Primary Health Centres, far below the recommended ratio. To address this, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Tata Trusts initiated the Model Urban Primary Health Care Project in 2017, aiming to bolster primary healthcare based on baseline assessments.
The collaboration between Tata Trusts and the Corporation has played a crucial role in promoting a comprehensive approach to primary healthcare. Seeking to further enhance these services, technical assistance has been sought from HSTP.
To initiate this partnership, NMC, alongside Tata Trusts and AIIMS Nagpur, organized a stakeholder consultation workshop on January 21, 2020.
This report outlines the priority areas for strengthening primary healthcare in Nagpur, collates stakeholders' inputs on comprehensive primary healthcare models, and discusses strategies for healthcare improvement over the next 3 to 5 years. The sessions focused on fundamental aspects of comprehensive primary healthcare, incorporating insights from both Indian and global experiences while considering the unique context of Nagpur. Emphasis was placed on the importance of implementation research to tailor interventions to the city's specific needs and challenges.
