The India Research Management Initiative (IRMI), launched by India Alliance in February 2018, aims to enhance research management in India, helping organizations and institutions strengthen their strategic research capacities, and create a community of practice supporting knowledge creation and innovation to address global challenges. Initially introduced as a 12-month pilot, IRMI focused on creating awareness, engaging with Indian institutions, and gathering information to guide future research management policies and funding opportunities.
The initiative aims to improve institutional ecosystems by enabling research institutes, organizations, and universities to maximize their research impact and meet global standards. By facilitating funding opportunities and activities in line with these priorities, IRMI plays a pivotal role in strengthening India's research ecosystem, ultimately contributing to a more robust and innovative research ecosystem empowering organizations & institutions to maximize their research impact and meet global standards, with far-reaching benefits for the community and society. The IRMI RM Fellowship supports early-stage research management offices by recruiting individuals to enhance research management capacities.
Health Systems Transformation Platform (HSTP), dedicated to advancing health systems research to support evidence-based policy reforms, is currently conducting research in Odisha, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh, focused on improving outcomes in primary care and health insurance. This is done in collaboration with renowned institutions, including the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Nossal Institute for Global Health at the University of Melbourne, and leading Indian organizations such as Swasti, Karnataka Health Promotion Trust, St. John’s Research Institute, Indian Institute of Public Health Bhubaneswar, and IIT Madras.
Further to this, we implement the India Health Policy & Systems Research Fellowship. Launched in 2020, the HPSR Fellowship Program is HSTP's flagship initiative, aimed at building the capacity of researchers and practitioners in Health Policy and Systems Research (HPSR). This program strengthens health systems by generating actionable evidence that can shape health policies, leading to improved health outcomes. It also fosters a network of HPSR experts across academia, research institutions, and policy settings, both in India and internationally. Developed with leading Indian and global institutions, the program plays a crucial role in enhancing India's research ecosystem and contributes to a more robust health policy and systems research capacity in the country.
HSTP, a proud recipient of the IRMI RM Fellowship, has significantly enhanced its research management. The fellowship, awarded in April 2022 and launched in January 2023, provided support for 58 mid-career researchers under the India Health Policy & Systems Research (HPSR) Fellowship, with ongoing support for Cohort 3. HPSR governance mechanisms monitored 33 research proposals, ensuring compliance through contract negotiations for 33 fellows from Cohort 1 and 2, with 14 fellows in Cohort 3 currently in progress. Additionally, HSTP's Home Healthcare Study in India gained ethics committee approval. It also engaged with researchers to develop policy notes for ongoing research. A digital research data management system has been introduced, with full implementation expected by the third year. Key partnerships with academic institutions and state governments were established, contributing to HSS. Major achievements include the development of a research management dashboard, an Excel-based funding directory, and the launch of "The Transformation Tracker", alongside regular social media updates.
Plans include refining the research management system and strengthening national and international partnerships to advance HSTP's research objectives.
